the story behind
Household Words
The year 1859 saw the end of the Household Words weekly periodical that Charles Dickens had conducted for the past nine years. It was not the end of his editorial career, for All the Year Round had already published a few issues before Dickens gave up entirely on Household Words. Despite being a short-lived magazine compared to its counterparts, Household Words brought several masterpieces in serialised forms to the literary world.
One that deserves more attention and readership is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Charles Dickens wrote to Mrs Gaskell on the 31st of January 1850, inviting her to contribute stories after her success with Mary Barton.
V. S. Pritchett says, "North and South is dead, and it is a pity". We are here to bring it back to life again. It was only part of Dickens's Household Words story. However, it is our beginning. It is our story to do justice to the forgotten literature from 200 years past, similar to North and South, to encourage you to give it a chance and to move forward from that point on to the next.
The Household Words of 2023 wishes to bring back the reading experience that 19th-century readers enjoyed when literature was at arm's length. Not only easily obtainable but can be read at one leisure at all times. While illustrated literature is a luxury in our day and time, it is one of our missions to delight readers' eyes and minds with both beautifully written and illustrated pieces of different varieties to deepen one understanding of a particular author, book, or period. All are carefully selected in one Journal.
